Name

Gift Giving

Core Skill

The core skill in this game is to encourage creativity and communication while enhancing swimming abilities through playful interaction with swim tools and toys.

Who

This game is appropriate for all levels and abilities, ranging from Level 1 beginners through to developmental swim teams.

What

Gift Giving is a fun and engaging swimming game where each swimmer selects their favorite toy or swimming tool from a collection and uses it in a designated activity. Afterward, they exchange their chosen item with another swimmer and explain a new, creative use for it.

How

  1. Toy Selection: Let the class go to the toy chest, swim tool storage, or wherever you keep all the swimming aids, devices, and toys you use daily. Give them the following instructions: “Pick one of your favorite toys or swimming tools that we use. BUT ONLY PICK 1. Get it and bring it back to your lane/lesson spot.”
  2. Activity Assignment: The instructor or coach will then give directions to everyone to do a swim or skill or simple activity with that device, toy, or tool.
  3. Gift Giving: Once everyone has completed an activity, the instructor then says, “Now it is time to GIVE YOUR FAVORITE GIFT!” Swimmers must exchange gifts with another person and then tell them how to use it in a fun or creative way as part of the gift.

Difficulties Instructors Might Face

  1. Creativity Blocks: Some swimmers may struggle to come up with creative uses for the devices and toys. In these cases, instructors might need to prompt them with ideas or assign activities and games themselves.
  2. Skill Levels: Balancing the game to suit different skill levels may require the instructor to adapt or modify activities so that all participants can engage comfortably and safely.
  3. Time Management: Ensuring that all swimmers get a turn to use and exchange toys within a limited class time may be challenging. It is crucial to keep the game flowing and manage transitions effectively.
  4. Interpersonal Dynamics: Swimmers might be hesitant to exchange their chosen toy or may feel unsure about instructing their peers. Instructors need to foster a supportive environment where students feel comfortable sharing and communicating.
